Everyday explanation
Want to know which lunch is most common among colleagues? You conduct a survey: ask everyone the same question and record the answers.
Three things make the survey useful:
- Same question for everyone — otherwise, they answer different things.
- Clear options — “sandwich, soup, salad, other” is easier to analyse than free text.
- Record immediately — what you keep in your head disappears.
Interactive
Make a tally chart while collecting answers:
| Lunch | Tally | Count |
|---|---|---|
| sandwich | ⅠⅠⅠⅠ ⅠⅠ | 7 |
| soup | ⅠⅠⅠⅠ | 5 |
| salad | ⅠⅠ | 2 |
| nothing | ⅠⅠⅠⅠ ⅠⅠⅠ | 8 |
Add them up: 7 + 5 + 2 + 8 = 22. Does this match the number of colleagues you asked? If not, someone has been forgotten or counted twice. That check is worth ten seconds every time.
