Does the AI remember what I said?

Be able to explain that a chat usually starts over from nothing and what memory would mean.

Prerequisites

Everyday explanation

You tell an AI that you like dogs. The next day you open a new chat — and it knows nothing.

Why? Mostly the model only gets to see what is in the ongoing conversation. When you close it, it is gone. It is like talking to somebody who forgets everything when you part.

Within the same chat it does remember, though: it reads the whole conversation every time it answers. That is why it can say «as you said earlier …».

Intuition

What would memory mean? Some AI services have it now: they save things about you between the times.

Good: you do not have to repeat who you are and how you want your answers. It can build on what you did before.

Less good: it remembers things you have forgotten you said. It can remember wrongly and think that something old still holds. And somebody is storing the information.

Good rules: check in the settings whether the memory is on, look now and then at what has been saved, and delete what you do not want kept. It should always be possible to switch off.
