Everyday explanation
A table contains rows and columns of numbers. A chart visualises the same numbers so patterns emerge immediately.
- Bar chart: compare groups (sales per product category).
- Line chart: something that changes over time (monthly revenue over a year).
- Pie chart: parts of a whole (how a household budget is split between rent, food, and leisure).
The wrong chart can be misleading: a line chart of sales per category might suggest a trend or a relationship between categories, which is incorrect.
Interactive
Read the data: number of customer cases Monday–Friday: 12, 15, 11, 18, 20.
- Which day had the most cases? Friday (20).
- How many more cases were there on Thursday compared to Wednesday? 18 − 11 = 7.
- Correct chart? Line — it shows development over time.
Misleading charts: if the y-axis starts at 10 instead of 0, the difference between 11 and 12 looks much larger than it actually is. Always check where the axis starts.
