AI and the labour market
Be able to discuss how AI changes occupations with examples and without exaggeration.
Prerequisites
Intuition
AI rarely replaces a whole occupation. It replaces tasks — and creates new ones.
| The occupation | The task AI takes over | The task that becomes more important |
|---|---|---|
| A translator | the raw translation | reviewing, nuance, responsibility for the result |
| A programmer | writing standard code | designing the system, reviewing, testing |
| A doctor | reading images (a suggestion) | judging, talking to the patient, deciding |
| Customer service | the ordinary questions | difficult and sensitive cases |
| An illustrator | quick drafts | the idea, the style, the customer's actual need |
The pattern: the routine is automated, the responsibility and the judgement stay with the human being.
Interactive
Two exaggerations to avoid:
- «AI takes all the jobs» — historically, automation has moved work rather than erased it. The cash machine did not immediately reduce the number of bank clerks; their tasks changed.
- «AI changes nothing» — some tasks disappear fast, and for the person who does precisely those tasks it is real and hard.
Do the analysis yourself: choose an occupation, list five tasks, and mark for each: fully automated, gets AI support, stays with the human being. Justify it with how predictable the task is and how serious a mistake would be.
That is the analysis employers and unions really do.
Mastery means
- Gives examples of tasks that are changed by AI
- Reasons about the change without exaggerating in either direction
